Vol.1 traza un recorrido por las diferentes corrientes de pensamiento con el fin de revisar, de una forma más completa, la propuesta de Karl Marx con respecto a una teoría de la ideología. En este, el primero de cuatro volúmenes sobre el tema, el autor busca dilucidar cómo Marx concibió esta noción, cuáles fueron sus propósitos y qué factores dificultaron su aplicación en la sociedad.

El concepto de ideología que propone Jorge Larraín en este texto, se relaciona con la tradición marxista tras la muerte de este filósofo, y que es trabajado, principalmente, por autores como Lenin, Lukács, Gramsci y Althusser. Larraín hace referencia en sus notas introductorias, a la poca importancia que se le dio al concepto de ideología tras la muerte de Marx, pues como él señala, entre 1930 y 1964, las posibilidades de generar una revolución socialista eran muy pocas y, por tanto, el número y calidad de autores y obras marxistas es mínimo, con lo cual el concepto de ideología permanece en el olvido hasta los años 1965-1990.

What does it mean to say that we live in a secular age? Almost everyone would agree that we--in the West, at least--largely do. And clearly the place of religion in our societies has changed profoundly in the last few centuries. In what will be a defining book for our time, Charles Taylor takes up the question of what these changes mean--of what, precisely, happens when a society in which it is virtually impossible not to believe in God becomes one in which faith, even for the staunchest believer, is only one human possibility among others.

Taylor, long one of our most insightful thinkers on such questions, offers a historical perspective. He examines the development in "Western Christendom" of those aspects of modernity which we call secular. What he describes is in fact not a single, continuous transformation, but a series of new departures, in which earlier forms of religious life have been dissolved or destabilized and new ones have been created. "Ecos de la revolución pingüina: avances, debates y silencios en la reforma educacional", es un libro que nace del trabajo colaborativo entre el Centro de Investigación Avanzada en Educación de la Universidad de Chile y la oficina de UNICEF Chile, que busca reflexionar y debatir sobre los propósitos, estrategias y medidas que forman parte de la transformación del sistema educacional que surgieron tras la llamada revolución pingüina.

Durante el primer semestre de 2006, una masiva movilización de estudiantes secundarios remeció a la sociedad chilena y sacudió a las nuevas autoridades de gobierno, convirtiéndose en uno de los movimientos sociales más significativos de las últimas décadas. Los cantos y consignas de la revolución de los pingüinos se apagaron, pero sus consecuencias se perciben nítidamente en la educación chilena.

Para responder a la protesta estudiantil, el campo político -gobierno y oposición- acordó intervenir el sistema educativo, introduciendo diversos cambios que en la práctica conforman una nueva reforma educacional. Este conjunto de modificaciones constituye la reestructuración institucional del sistema escolar más relevante desde la vuelta a la democracia en 1990.

En "Ecos de la revolución pingüina" y a través de diferentes perspectivas, 17 expertos de diversas instituciones analizan  los temas más relevantes y controversiales de esta emergente reforma educacional: ¿Por qué habría que apoyar especialmente a la educación pública si cada vez más familias llevan a sus hijos a escuelas privadas? ¿Son la Superintendencia de Educación y la Agencia de Calidad un aporte o un retroceso para el mejoramiento del sistema escolar? ¿Cómo se puede mejorar la formación de los profesores si las universidades son autónomas?, ¿Es posible reducir la educación básica y extender la educación media?, ¿Es compatible la selección de alumnos por parte de las escuelas con el derecho a la educación y la equidad educativa?, son algunas de las interrogantes que se estudian.
